Buying Cleaning Blade for Sharp: A Field Guide for Copier Repair Shops

When a Sharp MX-4070 starts leaving toner streaks or ghosting on the drum, the first suspect is often the cleaning blade. Most shops blame the drum, but nine times out of ten it's the blade edge that's worn or nicked. If you're buying these parts in volume, you already know the OEM price is brutal. What you might not know is how to tell a good aftermarket blade from a bad one without installing it. That's what this guide is for.
Know the Families: MX and AR Series Differences
Sharp's MX series (MX-2610, MX-3110, MX-4070, etc.) uses a different blade profile than the older AR series (AR-5316, AR-5320). The MX blades are typically longer and have a specific rubber hardness rating, usually around 70 Shore A. The AR blades are more forgiving, but the mounting bracket design is different. Don't try to cross them—you'll get leaks at the ends.
Also, the color units (cyan, magenta, yellow) use the same blade as black in many models, but not always. For example, the MX-4070 uses the same blade across all four colors, but the MX-7090 uses a different blade for black due to higher throughput. Check your parts manual. A 30-second lookup saves you a return shipment.
Inspect Before You Install: What the Edge Tells You
The blade's edge is everything. When you receive a batch, take one out and look at it under a bright light. The edge should be perfectly straight, with no chips, waves, or burrs. Run your fingernail gently along the edge—you should feel a sharp, even contact. If you feel any bumps or dips, that blade will streak.
Also, check the rubber's flexibility. A good blade bends about 30 degrees without cracking. If it feels stiff or shows white stress marks when bent, the compound is old or cheap. That leads to premature wear and toner leakage. We've seen blades that look fine but fail in 10,000 prints. The rubber compound is not all the same.
Compatibility and Markings: Don't Trust the Box
OEM Sharp blades have a part number stamped on the metal bracket, like DUNTK0768FCZZ for the MX series. Aftermarket blades often have no stamp or a generic code. That's not a deal-breaker, but verify the dimensions. Measure the length and width of the metal bracket and the rubber lip. Compare to your known-good sample. Even a 1mm difference can cause the blade to sit wrong in the drum unit, leading to uneven pressure and streaks.
Also, check the mounting holes. Sharp uses either two or three screws depending on the model. The hole spacing must match exactly. If you're buying for multiple models, keep a spec sheet handy. We've had customers order blades for MX-3110 and receive ones that fit MX-2610. They look similar but the holes are 2mm off. You'll strip the threads if you force it.
Buying in Bulk: What to Ask Your Supplier
When you're stocking up, don't just look at price per piece. Ask about the rubber's shelf life. A blade that's been sitting in a warehouse for two years will lose its flexibility. Reputable suppliers rotate stock. Ask for the manufacturing date code on the packaging. If they can't provide it, that's a red flag.
Also, check the packaging. Blades should be in protective sleeves or trays, not loose in a bag. The edge can get damaged in transit. Ask about their return policy for defective units.
