The glass window—the long strip under the unit—often gets toner buildup that causes fading. That can be cleaned, but if it's scratched, the unit is junk. Also inspect the laser diode housing for any signs of moisture or corrosion, especially if the unit came from a machine that sat in a warehouse.
Connectors are another weak spot. The flat ribbon cable that plugs into the main board can have bent pins or torn traces. Look at the connector on the unit itself—if it's been pulled by an inexperienced tech, the locking tab might be broken. A broken tab means intermittent connections, which causes random print defects that are hard to diagnose. If you're buying online, ask the seller for close-up photos of the connector and the mirror. If they can't provide them, move on.
New, Remanufactured, or Used: What's the Smart Money?
New OEM laser units from OKI are expensive—often $300–$500 wholesale. That eats into your repair margin, especially if the customer is price-sensitive.
