When the blade is made from cheap urethane or rubber, the edge wears unevenly within a few thousand prints. You'll see it as a thin line of toner build-up on the blade, then a scratch on the drum surface.
Another common failure is blade deformation at the ends. Sharp drums are sensitive to edge pressure. If the blade's mounting pad is too stiff or the blade is slightly twisted during installation, the ends lift or dig in. That causes the classic 'edge ghost'—a dark band on one side of the print. In my experience, 70% of 'drum replacement' calls on Sharp AR-5xxx and MX-2xxx series are actually blade issues. Replacing the drum costs ten times more than swapping the blade.
Then there's the material itself. Genuine Sharp blades use a specific polyurethane that stays flexible in cold weather and doesn't swell with toner oils. What to Inspect Before You Install

It should be perfectly straight, with no nicks, waves, or shiny spots. A shiny spot means the edge was polished during manufacturing, which is fine, but if it's uneven, that's a red flag.
Press the blade edge with your fingernail. It should flex slightly and return. If it feels rock-hard or cracks, the material is wrong. Also, check the mounting pad—it should be flat and free of bubbles. A warped pad will cause uneven pressure on the drum.
Finally, verify the blade dimensions against the Sharp part number. Common Sharp blades include the AR-160/200 series, AR-235/275, MX-2600/3100, and MX-M264/354. Each has a specific length and thickness. A blade that's 2 mm short will leave a gap at the end, causing toner to leak past and contaminate the charge roller.
How to Avoid Installation-Related Failures
Even the best blade fails if installed wrong. Sharp copiers have a specific procedure: you must clean the drum surface with a soft cloth and toner powder, then apply a thin layer of lubricant to the blade edge. Many techs skip the lubrication because they think it's optional. It's not. The lubricant reduces friction during the first few rotations, allowing the blade to seat properly.
Also, watch the blade's orientation. The blade has a leading edge and a trailing edge. If you flip it, the edge will catch and tear. On some Sharp models, there's a small arrow on the blade holder—if not, check the part drawing. Finally, torque the screws to the spec, usually around 0.6 N·m. Over-tightening warps the blade; under-tightening lets it vibrate.
One more tip: always replace the blade when you replace the drum. Even if the old blade looks fine, the new drum has a different surface finish. Using an old blade on a new drum is a recipe for premature failure. It's a small cost compared to a callback.
